Seattle String Ensemble

The Seattle String Ensemble is a versatile trio featuring Yuriy Mikhlin on violin, Thane Lewis on viola and Mannfried Funk on cello. The group was founded in 1994 and is composed of current and former members of the Seattle Symphony, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, and the Northwest Sinfonietta. They are a dynamic group whose repertoire spans the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras and includes jazz and pop classics, opera excerpts, and some ragtime. The members are curently Artists in Residence at Church of the Ascension in Magnolia.

The Seattle String Ensemble offers professional performances of the highest caliber. Yury Mikhlin, first violinist, played for twenty years as Assistant Concertmaster of the Kiev State Opera and Ballet in Ukraine, and currently serves as Concertmaster of the Federal Way Philharmonic, while playing frequently with the Seattle Symphony, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, and the Seattle Opera. Cellist, Mannfried Funk, has been a member of the Seattle Symphony, Ballet, and Opera orchestras as well as serving in South America as Co-Principal of the National Symphony of Colombia. Violist, Thane Lewis, studied in Vienna, and at the Aspen Festival before receiving his Master of Music degree from the University of Washington. Mr. Lewis performs Broadway shows with the 5th Avenenue Theater orchestra in addition to his work with the Northwest Sinfonietta and performs as the Principal Viola of the Tacoma Symphony.
