We want to recreate the sounds you might have heard in the street corners and marketplaces of coastal cities in the Caribbean before the onslaught of keyboards and electric guitars -- the beat carried to the New World in the chanting of African slaves, in the sad verses of Spanish peasants, in the homesick squeeze boxes of English sailors.
We want our music to smell of sweet rum, black beans and rice, fried fish, plantains and casabe. We want to bring to life the sound of the trade winds. For us, this means playing the creole music of Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. Specifically, son, rumba, plena, merengue, vallenato, gaita and fulia, percussion-heavy music that cuts through the formalities to get you dancing.
Our mix of traditional and original music is always fresh, partly because of our choice of instruments. Unlike other latin bands, we are not heavy with brass, relying on one trumpet or flugelhorn. Our strength is our rhythm base of congas, timbales or trap set, maracas or guira. Strings fill in the gaps with strong bass, guitar, Puerto Rican cuatro, Venezuelan cuatro and tres. Finally, we stick to simple vocal lines and harmonies, letting the total blend be the signature of each song.
